Montages
The following files are montages, or collections of gymnastics clips set
to music. These are the ones I really love - a good way to figure out
what is so fabulous about gymnastics if you're not a diehard fan looking
for hosted vids...or if you happen to be bored with only an internet
connection to entertain you.
Storytime - I made this one, of easy skills in compulsory routines that are BEAUTIFULLY done. Set to Danny Elfman's Storytime (Edward Scissorhands Soundtrack).
Lose Yourself - Clips of Vanessa Atler's bid to make the 2000 Olympic team. She didn't go to the Olympics, but she was an amazing gymnast. Set to Lose Yourself by Eminem, one of my favorite "determination" songs. It totally fits. I wish it used the whole song, near there end there's a line: "here I go with my shot / feet fail me not / this may be the only opportunity that I got". Talk about perfect!
Daniela Silivas Story - I love Silivas. She had beautiful gymnastics and a great personality. This is a good retrospective of her career, and if you are affected by this sort of thing, especially if you are familiar with the 1988 Olympic All Around (watch Face to Face, below, first), it's rather moving.
Face to Face - Silivas again, this time comparing her 1988 Olympic all around performance to that of Elena Shushunova - one of the most debated AA competitions ever, even almost 20 years later. Set to Face to Face by Siouxie and the Banshees.
Just a Little Girl - featuring Jamie Dantzscher, whom I really like. I like this song (although it's a bit mushy), and I think Jamie was usually underestimated, but she had much more in her. I have a sneaking suspicion some people have the same attitude about me. Heheheh good luck with that. Amy Studt's Just a Little Girl.
Let It Be - Dominique Moceanu, from 1996 to 2000. She went through a lot of crap, like divorcing her parents, injuries, etc. She came back in 1998 and looked better than EVER before. Great news is, she's coming back AGAIN this year! Go Domi! We're the same age, and if she's still doing gym, so can I!
Romanian Training Documentary - An interesting, behind the scenes look into the current training regimen of the Romanian National Team. Ice Queen, by Within Temptation.
Soviet Training Documentary - set to Wind of Change, by the Scorpions. Very appropriate, seeing as how the footage is from training and competition for the 92 Olympics, the last time the Soviets competed as a team.
Routines - coming soon!
Natalia Laschenova 1989 World Championships Vault -
Best. FTY. Ever.
Natalia Laschenova 1989 Floor
Dominique Moceanu 1996 Olympics Beam, Team Finals
Dominique Moceanu 1996 Olympics Vault, All Around - sure she sat this
down in team, and since she clocked her head on beam in the first
rotation, she didn't have a shot at a medal...but DAMN, girl proved she
could nail this completely blind landing with perfect form.
Svetlana Boguinskaya, 19 Floor - my favorite gymnastics interpretation
of Carmen ever. I don't think anyone else used this piece from Carmen,
everyone uses the predictable Toreador or the Prelude...but not Bogi.
Olga Strazheva, 1989 Floor - completely exemplary of why Soviet
choreography was, and remains, completely unparalleled. Tchaikovsky's
Rite of Spring.
Andreea Raducan, 1999 Floor - that middle sequence is just too cute.
Andreea Raducan, 2000 Floor - She looks so happy. I'm glad she at least
got to feel like the real Olympic Champion for some hours. I always put
this song at the end of my running workouts, gives me goosebumps.
Aurelia Dobre, 1987 Beam - one of the most gorgeous and unique beam
routines ever, especially the middle flexibility holds.
Henrietta Onodi, 1992 Floor - another great example of Eastern Bloc
choreography. It's West Side Story, and she DIES at the end of the
routine! Henni was too kool for skool.
